The Frost River Back Bay Lumbar Pack is sizable and is designed to haul a lot while keeping the load comfortably situated on your hips. A durable and breathable cotton web pistol belt slides through a sleeve at the back of the pack, while cotton web load transfer straps cinch the pack to the belt for a stable carry. The transfer straps form a Y to stabilize the load across two rows of web daisy chain that cross the front of the pack. The daisy chain offers multiple attachment points: string some cord to carry a layer, attach accessories or clip a carabiner.
At each end of the Back Bay are drawstring ECO pockets that provide a spot for water bottles or smaller things you’d like to keep close at hand. Hidden behind the ECO pockets are sleeves that allow the load transfer straps to be threaded behind the pocket, close to the pack, for ease-of-access to the pockets, or wrapped around the pocket for an exceptionally stable carry.
The Back Bay features a large main compartment with padded back and sleeve, plus several internal attachment points. The front offers a slim zippered slip pocket for smaller items. Daisy chain inside the pocket mirrors the exterior webbing and helps with organisation of pens, tools, and other small items you might need.
On the bottom of the pack are two low profile bridle leather lash squares, perfect for a small bedroll, tarp, tripod or other larger piece of gear (compliment your pack with a pair of leather bedroll straps, here).
Sturdy, solid brass D-rings at the end of the heavy-duty main zipper provide attachment points for a shoulder strap. Two small tabs at the back of the pack provide options for stowing the load transfer straps when not in use. The lash squares, web attachments and D-rings keep the Back Bay versatile, as a standalone piece of equipment, or attached to an Isle Royale Jr, Mini, or other mid-size pack.
Whether you’re on an overnight, on a bike, on cross-country skis, or exploring the woods, the Back Bay Lumbar Pack is a versatile companion that’ll adapt to almost any adventure and keep your gear close.

We use lumbar packs extensively at work and this is by far the best I’ve come across . From the high quality materials to how well it carries loads I cannot praise this highly enough. Yes it may be pricey but it’s worth every penny. The bedroll straps are a brilliant addition for carrying lightweight jackets. Great service from Naturalman .
This pack is just brilliant for a day pack, or great to accompany your rucksack, superb quality as expected from Frost River. This time of year I’m on the prowl for wild camp sites ,so this pack ticks all the boxes for day roaming, I also purchased a FR pouch which works really well on the belt, so all in all just a brilliant piece of kit.. check out Marks U tube vid , it sold it to me... excellent service from Naturalman.....I’ll B back.....
Good product. It is roomy and simple in construction with nice traditional materials. One minor gripe was some fraying at the point of the webbing belt, but this was easily remedied with a smear of epoxy. You can fit an OS Explorer map in the zip pocket easily. Good delivery turnaround.
The Frost River Back Bay lumbar pack has left me with a big smile on my face. So versatile! I can use it as a pack in the forest, or an airport cabin bag, or an accessible pack to lash to the yoke of my canoe. With a hammock/tarp set-up this pack could even be used for an overnighter. I've also purchased the bedroll straps which fasten to the lashing squares on the bottom of the pack. This enables you to carry a bedroll, wool blanket or mat. How is it to wear? A joy to be honest. It holds a nice, secure position on the hips and leaves the shoulders free. I really enjoy the freedom of movement in comparison to a rucksack. The build quality is as you would expect from Frost River. This is a pack that will last for ages and will take some serious wear and tear. All in all, a great bit of kit that I would have no trouble in recommending. Natural Man delivered promptly and my order was well packaged.
