The first Mackinaw coats were commissioned for the British Army at Fort St. Joseph, Ontario in November 1811. They later became the working uniform of American loggers across the upper Midwest during the great logging boom of the mid-19th century — men who needed warmth, freedom of movement and genuine durability in punishing conditions.
Today, the Mackinaw coat remains exactly what it has always been: one of the finest natural cold-weather outer layers ever made.
