In 1914 Filson patented the Cruiser jacket — a design so well resolved that it has barely needed changing in over a hundred years. Originally engineered for foresters working deep in the Pacific Northwest and adopted as standard issue by the U.S. Forest Service, the Cruiser became the benchmark for outdoor work jackets across generations of sportsmen, tradesmen and anyone who spends serious time outdoors.
The Field Cruiser Jacket is the cotton variation of that same iconic design — lighter, more versatile and built for the shoulder seasons and warmer working days when the heavy wool original is too much. Same pocket arrangement. Same Filson logic. Just built for a broader range of conditions.
The Field Cruiser is cut from 9.5 oz. 100% cotton reverse sateen — a tightly woven, smooth-faced fabric with a subtle sheen and a weight that sits perfectly between a shirt and a jacket. It is garment-dyed and pre-washed for a broken-in feel from the very first wear, so there is no stiff, boxy breaking-in period. It looks and feels like a jacket that has already earned its keep.
Reverse sateen wears exceptionally well over time, softening gradually with washing and use while holding its structure and colour far better than lighter cotton fabrics. This is a jacket that improves with age.
Four front cargo pockets with snapped flaps keep tools, kit and essentials secure and accessible without digging through layers. A slotted utility pocket sits on the left chest for quick-access items — the kind of thoughtful detail that only comes from a design refined over a century of real-world use. An interior stow pocket handles valuables you want kept close and out of sight.
This pocket arrangement was considered revolutionary when it was patented in 1914. More than a hundred years later it remains one of the most practical configurations in outerwear.
The button-secure front and adjustable cuffs give you full control over fit and ventilation depending on the conditions and your activity level. The single-layer back panel keeps the jacket lighter and less restrictive than the original double-layer Cruiser — making it the right choice for active days in the field, on the farm or around the yard.
One of the Field Cruiser's greatest strengths is its versatility. It works as a chore coat on the land, a work jacket on a building site, a mid-layer on a cold morning walk or an everyday utility coat for anyone who wants something that looks good and functions even better. It is the jacket you reach for without thinking — because it always does the job.
This is the jacket for people who want outerwear with genuine history behind it — something that works as hard as they do and looks better for every day it is worn. Whether you are working the land, heading into the hills or simply want a cotton utility jacket built to last decades rather than seasons, the Filson Field Cruiser delivers. At Natural Man we road-test everything we carry, and the Field Cruiser has earned its place as one of the most versatile and dependable jackets we stock.
