There are backpacks that make a lot of noise about what they can do. The Filson Journeyman is not one of them. It simply turns up, carries your load and gets you where you're going — on the trail, on the job or on the commute — without fuss, without failure and without ever needing to be replaced. This is the backpack that earns its keep quietly, season after season.
Filson have been making gear for people who depend on it since 1897. The Journeyman is their best-selling backpack, and it is not hard to understand why.
The Journeyman is not built from one material — it is built from the best parts of several, each chosen for a specific reason.
The main compartment is constructed from 14 oz. oil finish Tin Cloth — a tightly woven canvas duck thoroughly saturated with a paraffin wax formulation for maximum water repellency. This is the same material that has protected the gear of loggers and sportsmen in the rain-soaked forests of the Pacific Northwest for generations. Rain, sleet, snow — Tin Cloth has seen it all and kept on going.
Filson's industrial-strength 2-ply by 3-ply Rugged Twill forms the back panel and reinforces the base, adding structure and long-term durability exactly where the pack takes the most punishment. This is 100% cotton built to last decades, not seasons.
The adjustment straps, grab handle, zipper pulls and rain gutter closure are all made from vegetable-tanned Bridle Leather sourced from Wickett & Craig — a Pennsylvania tannery operating since 1867. These hides are slowly steeped in an environmentally-friendly bark-tannin solution, finished with tallows and waxes for suppleness and lustre. The result is leather as well-suited to luggage as it is to bridles and saddlery — which is precisely the point.
The padded shoulder straps are constructed from Tin Cloth and lined with Moleskin — a sueded cotton that minimises slipping and improves breathability. The contoured, adjustable straps are secured to the pack with that same Bridle Leather, ensuring they hold their position mile after mile.
The fully lined main compartment is secured by a solid brass heavy-gauge YKK zipper, shielded from water along its entire length by a Tin Cloth rain gutter. It opens more than halfway down the bag for easy access and clear visibility into the pack — no more rummaging blind. The padded back panel protects against sharp or bulky loads, and the interior padded pocket fits a laptop up to 15 inches.
The exterior pocket is gusseted with corner snaps, allowing it to sit low-profile when lightly loaded or expand outward when you need the extra capacity. The one-hand-operable snapped pocket flap keeps quick-access essentials dry and within reach. Every detail — from the rain gutter snap closure to the leather zipper pulls — has been considered and executed with the same quiet competence the Journeyman embodies throughout.
This is a backpack for people who are done buying backpacks. Whether you are heading into the hills, riding to work or travelling light across continents, the Journeyman handles it without complaint. At Natural Man we road-test everything we carry, and the Filson Journeyman is exactly the kind of gear we built this shop around — thoughtfully engineered, built from honest materials and designed to provide dependable service for as many miles as you care to walk.
