New for Summer 2021
The Casstrom Woodsman knife has been upgraded and now features an improved Sleipner steel blade that takes advantage of excellent corrosion resistance properties.
Designed by custom knife maker Roger Harrington, The Woodsman is a robust, full-tang knife, with a blade measuring approximately 9cm long. It features a straight and fairly round handle made from 5,000+ year old Bog Oak and has a lanyard hole (and leather lanyard). It is supplied with a high quality, drop style leather sheath.
The blade is made of c.4mm thick Sleipner high carbon tool steel, making the blade extremely durable with heavy use such as log-splitting (batoning). The blade has a Scandinavian grind which makes it ideal for all tasks around camp, specifically working with wood.
This is the combo version of the Woodsman that features a matching bog oak fire steel and enhanced leather sheath.
About the steel
Uddeholm Sleipner carbon/tool steel has a high carbon content. The chemical composition allows it to be tempered to a high hardness with retained ductility (ability to deform without breakage) and toughness while being easy to grind and capable of obtaining a very sharp and durable edge. The chromium composition ensures a higher level of corrosion resistance compared to other carbon steel blades. It is still good practice to dry the blade after use and protect with oil or wax when stored in a high humidity environment.

This knife just screams quality. I was a little concerned over the blade length but actually it’s turned out to be a lot more functional than my other longer knives. Very easy to control and batons very well. I have two minor criticisms, the firesteel fell apart the 6th time I used it. No real biggy just epoxy’d it back together and I would like the sleeve on the sheath that the firesteel fits in to be a bit shorter so the steel protrudes and you can loop the elastic over the end to stop it sliding off. Overall I would recommend this knife to anyone and I will certainly be recommending it when I teach my next class next month.
I’ve held back a few weeks before posting a review… wanted to get a bit of use in first! I LOVE this knife. I’d initially wondered if this smaller length would be an issue, but it’s really a big benefit, making it far more versatile for simple carving tasks as well as being very capable for heavier duty tasking. It’s hugely capable, beautifully made & keeps an edge better than any other knife I’ve owned. The bog oak scales feel great… cool to the touch at first, beautifully finished and just a fascinating material. As always, Mark has been very, very helpful indeed (thanks mark for the great comms and help) Did I happen to mention that I love this knife???
Excellent and swift service .
Fantastic knife
I recently recieved this knife and matching firesteel. I am yet to take it out but having held and looked over the quality of the product is evident. Looking forward to bringing out and putting it to use.
