How to Fit Ariat Western Boots

To fit cowboy boots properly, you’ll need to consider several factors. With so many styles and shapes to choose from, getting the right fit can be tricky. We began making Ariat Western boots in 1995, and some of our original styles, like the Heritage Roper, are still on our list of best sellers today. So, it’s fair to say that we know a thing or two about boots. To help you find your absolute perfect fit, we’ve put together a fit guide to get you started.

How to Fit Cowboy Boots in Four Easy Steps

  1. Put the boot on and listen for the faint “pop” as your foot slides into place.
  2. Confirm you have the proper amount of heel lift—a small amount is normal but you don’t want too much.
  3. Stand and place your thumb sideways between the tip of your longest toe and the end of the boot. This will ensure you have enough room for your toes.
  4. Walk around to make sure everything feels just right.

In-Depth Tips: How a Cowboy Boot Should Fit

Step 1: Put on Your Boots

The first step in fitting a new pair of boots is to pull them on. First, slip your foot into the shaft (the upper portion of the boot) and firmly grasp the pull tabs or pull-holes to assist in putting the boot on. As you pull the boot on, you may feel resistance around the arch of your foot and your heel against the inside of the shaft. Once you pull the boot past this resistance point, you’ll hear a faint popping noise as your foot settles into its resting place.

Step 2: Check for Slight Heel Lift

Heel lift is the gap between the boot's insole and your heel. It is caused by a slight amount of room between your arch and the boot's toe. This space should not exceed 1/8th of an inch and is necessary for a proper and comfortable fit.

Step 3: Check the Fit

Once you have the boots on, it's time to make sure they fit. To ensure the proper fit for any boot, make sure the widest part of the ball of your foot rests on the widest part of the boot’s outsole.

Step 4: Check the Tip of the Boot

Once your feet feel comfortable, stand up in your boots, and lay your thumb sideways across the top of the boot to check the distance between the tip of your toe and the end of the boot. Your toe should rest about one thumb’s width away from the end of the boot, also known as the “toe box.” Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • The toe box is the portion of the boot that houses your toes. It starts at the base of your toes and ends at the tip of the boot. Wider toe shapes will often have a wider toe box.
  • Remember everyone’s toes are unique, so it’s always a good idea to check that sideways thumb distance from the tip of your toe to the end of the toe box.

Step 5: Walk Around to Confirm Comfort and Fit

Whether you are trying boots on at home or in our store, make sure you walk around in them (indoors) to ensure you have the perfect fit. Remember, 1/8th of an inch is the ideal room for heel lift. Anything more than that and the boots will feel large and clunky, anything less will make your boots feel too tight.

As you pull the boots on, you may feel a slight resistance in the arch area. This is expected, as it allows your foot to get a snug fit and ensures that you also have the appropriate amount of heel lift.

Socks will also have an effect on the way your boots fit so we recommend using a good boot sock. Remember, the socks you wear when you try the boots on should be the same ones you will wear in the boots. A thicker pair may lead to you needing a larger size and a thinner sock may feel like you need a more snug fit.
