Frost River Explorer Duffel Bag

Frost River

Had Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Ranulph Fiennes or Robert Scott (of the Antarctic) been aware of the The Frost River Explorer Duffel Bag, they may have almost certainly selected it as their go-to support bag for all of their kit.

Over engineered for robustness and designed for heavy loads, the Explorer Duffel is equally at home strapped to a camel traversing the desert or, lashed to your Land Rover on safari. It is equally at home supporting more ordinary adventures on flights and weekends away.

Wide, web handles circumnavigate the bag, meaning heavier loads can be managed easier. A dust flap covers the main zip, protecting it from rain and dirt and keeping your contents clean and dry.

A generous side pocket closes with a leather strap and brass post allowing for easy access. There's a grab handle on one end and a slim profile zip pocket on the other.

Offered in three sizes, the small is sized like a gym bag. The CarryOn is a weekend bag and as the name suggests, meets most commercial airline hand baggage requirements. The Large Explorer really does live up to its name; its considerable proportions mean that it can carry a lot.

All are built from waxed canvas, premium leather, and solid brass hardware at Frost River in Duluth Minnesota and come with the Frost River lifetime guarantee.

Upgrade your bag with a Frost River buckskin padded shoulder pad here.

Excellent bag, excellent experience purchasing from Natural Man, both highly recommended.

Tough Bag

Currently abroad with it. Very thick waxed cotton. Have high expectations for its longevity and much cheaper than a Filson equivalent.

First Class bag

The duffel bag by Frist River exceeded my expectations. It's a first class piece of kit and feels ready for a ton of abuse. Service recet from Natural Man was superb too. Doubtless cheaper & nastier bags exist but you won't be disappointed with Frost River. Bought this Frost River bag for my brother (who's in the premium outdoor clothing business) and he loves it.

Frost River Explorer Duffel Bag (medium)

An unbelievably good piece of kit. Luggage, for me, has always been one step up from a supermarket shopping bag, the cheapest way of holding my stuff while travelling. Finally, though, I have arrived, thanks mainly to Covid. Due to being unable to travel, I can now afford wonderful luggage, with which to stay at home! This bag is of fantastic quality, durability and looks. No longer will I have to sidle up to reception desks with my luggage hidden behind my back. From now on I can stand proud at the Heathrow Airport carousel, the hotel lobby in Prague, the back of the Land Rover in the Gobi or the open canoe, somewhere inside the Arctic Circle. Seriously, though, I bought the medium bag and it is larger than I expected and incredibly tough. I can easily fit a week's clothing in it and still have room for the obligatory dozens of assorted charger plugs, laptops, phones, travel kettles and packets of proper English Breakfast tea. I'm pretty sure that this will be one of the few possessions I own which will last long enough to be handed on to my kids, though I may have to buy two more, in order to obviate a family feud when I go. I'll write an update to this review when I am able to start travelling again - when the bag has settled in, had a good trial and acquired a few honourable battle scars. Judging by the quality, that will be in about 50 years!
