Chocolate Muleskinner is Red Wing's oiled roughout leather, made using the reverse, flesh side of the hide as the exterior.
The result is a wonderfully textured leather that's particularly well suited to hard use. Rather than worrying about every scuff and scrape, you can embrace them. Wear creates variation in the nap, colour and finish, gradually producing a pair of boots that becomes unmistakably your own.
This isn't leather designed to stay looking new. It's designed to look better old.
The Blacksmith is built using Goodyear welt construction, creating a durable connection between the leather upper and outsole.
It's one of the foundations of traditional American bootmaking and, importantly, means the Blacksmith is resoleable. Look after the leather and these are boots capable of giving years of service.

The Vibram® 430 Mini-lug outsole gives the Blacksmith dependable all-season traction without the bulk and aggressive appearance of a full lugged work-boot sole.
That makes a considerable difference to the character of the boot. There's enough grip for poor weather and everyday outdoor use, but the relatively low-profile sole keeps the Blacksmith looking clean and versatile.
A steel shank adds further support and stability underfoot.
The Blacksmith 3339 is built on Red Wing's celebrated No. 8 Last, also used on some of the company's most iconic heritage boots.
Its characteristic bump toe provides room for the toes to move naturally while retaining the classic rounded Red Wing profile. The result is a boot that feels substantial without looking unnecessarily bulky.
Bronze eyelets and speed hooks, together with flat waxed laces, finish things properly.
We recommend dropping half a size from your usual shoe size. For broader feet, sticking with your normal size may provide the better fit.
