Vests, Waistcoats & Gilets – The Most Useful Layer You Can Own

Vest, waistcoat or gilet?

Depending on where you come from, what you’re wearing and who made it, all three terms can describe broadly the same thing:a sleeveless outer layer designed to keep your core warm while leaving your arms free to move.

In Britain, we tend to talk aboutmen’s gilets and waistcoats. Cross the Atlantic and the same garment is much more likely to be called avest. And while there are differences between styles, the principle is much the same.

It is also one of the oldest and most practical ideas in outdoor clothing.

Long before the modern synthetic padded gilet arrived, men working outdoors understood that keeping the torso warm made an enormous difference without the bulk or restriction of another coat. Wool, canvas and other hard-wearing fabrics made these garments suitable for farmers, woodsmen, hunters, railway workers and anyone else who spent their days outside.

Today, the same principle works just as well.

From awaxed cotton gilet for country sports to a heavyweightwool waistcoat, or acanvas workwear vest thrown over a flannel shirt, a good vest is one of those pieces of clothing that ends up being worn far more often than you expected.

Vest, Waistcoat or Gilet – What’s the Difference?

In modern outdoor clothing, the distinction has become fairly blurred.

Traditionally, awaistcoat in Britain was a tailored sleeveless garment, often forming part of a three-piece suit. But country clothing developed its own heavier wool and shooting waistcoats designed for practical outdoor use.

The wordgilet is now widely used in the UK for almost any sleeveless outer layer, particularly those intended for country, outdoor and casual wear.

Vest is the standard American term, which is why heritage American workwear brands such as Iron & Resin and Stormy Kromer use it.

So an Americanwaxed canvas work vest could quite legitimately be described in Britain as awaxed cotton gilet or canvas waistcoat.

Whatever you call it, what matters is what it does.

Why Wear a Men’s Gilet or Vest?

The great advantage of a vest is simple:warmth without restriction.

A jacket insulates your entire upper body. That's useful when it's properly cold, but often unnecessary when you're active.

A gilet concentrates insulation around your chest and back while leaving your shoulders and arms unrestricted.

That makes them particularly useful for:

  • Country sports and shooting

  • Fishing

  • Bushcraft and camping

  • Dog walking

  • Farming and outdoor work

  • Workshops and garages

  • Hiking and woodland walking

  • Everyday autumn and winter wear

They are particularly good during the changeable British weather when a shirt isn't quite enough but a full winter coat feels excessive.

And when winter properly arrives, the same vest becomes a usefulmid-layer underneath a heavier coat or waxed jacket.

The Workwear Vest – Born to Be Useful

American workwear has a long tradition of sleeveless canvas and wool layers. Removing the sleeves allowed workers to retain warmth without restricting movement around the shoulders and arms.

That's still one of the reasons a propermen's workwear vest works so well today.

Wear one over a heavyweight flannel, denim shirt or sweatshirt and you've got a practical combination for working outside, chopping wood, tinkering in the workshop or simply heading into town.

Iron & Resin Work Vest – Canvas Workwear Done Properly

The newIron & Resin Work Vest is a very good example of the breed.

Made from a tough9oz 100% cotton canvas outer, it has a cotton twill interior and quilted insulation, providing warmth around the torso without turning it into a bulky padded jacket. A substantial ribbed collar, heavy-duty #10 Talon zip, double-felled seams and drop-tail rear hem reinforce its workwear credentials.

It's a garment that looks right over an Iron & Resin flannel or denim shirt, but it is by no means restricted to the workwear look.

Wear it over a sweatshirt with jeans and boots and you've got an easy everyday autumn outfit. Add a heavier coat over the top when temperatures fall and it becomes an insulating mid-layer.

This is the Americancanvas work vest in its natural habitat: simple, rugged and useful.

Wool Gilets – Natural Insulation That Still Works

We've said it many times before, but wool is difficult to beat.

Before lightweight synthetic insulation existed, generations of people working in cold environments relied on wool because of its natural insulating properties.

And they were right.

A goodmen's wool gilet or wool waistcoat provides warmth without excessive bulk and works particularly well in the damp, changeable conditions we get in the UK.

It also ages extremely well.

Swanndri Saddleback Wool Gilet – New Zealand Wool for British Weather

TheSwanndri Men's Saddleback Wool Gilet is the latest addition to our range and represents the more traditional country approach.

Made from heavyweight475gsm 100% New Zealand wool, it's a substantial layer designed for cold weather. The full-length YKK zip, concealed zipped pockets and rib-knit collar keep things practical, while the Swanndri check back yoke gives a nod to the New Zealand outdoor heritage behind the brand. The Saddleback is currently part of our new-season Swanndri range.

Put it over a checked shirt or heavyweight cotton work shirt with moleskin trousers and boots and it looks completely at home. Equally, wear it with denim and a plain shirt and it becomes a straightforward everyday layer.

No technical fabrics. No unnecessary complication. Justheavyweight wool doing what wool does exceptionally well.

Stormy Kromer Mackinaw Wool Button Vest – The Traditional Wool Waistcoat

If the Swanndri represents New Zealand outdoor clothing, theStormy Kromer Mackinaw Wool Button Vest comes firmly from the American Northwoods tradition.

And this one is serious.

Made in the USA from26oz 100% virgin Mackinaw wool, the Stormy Kromer is unlined and uses a traditional four-button front with five pockets.

The result sits somewhere between an outdoor vest, country waistcoat and genuine heritage workwear.

It's also remarkably versatile.

Wear it over a chambray or flannel shirt for the classic American workwear look. Put it over a country check shirt and beneath a waxed jacket and it suddenly looks completely at home in the British countryside.

That's one of the things we like about good heritage clothing:the best designs travel well.

A garment originally intended for cold American working environments makes just as much sense for British field sports, bushcraft, walking or simply spending a cold Saturday outdoors.

Stormy Kromer Waxed Cotton Vest – Made for the Field

Then there is waxed cotton.

For British outdoor use, it's difficult to think of a more appropriate material.

TheStormy Kromer Waxed Cotton Vest uses a tough10oz 100% waxed cotton outer with five large pockets, antique brass hardware and a 100% cotton lining. It is made in the USA and designed as a genuinely functional outdoor layer.

This is the vest for the man who actually intends to use his pockets.

Fishing tackle, gloves, dog leads, tools, cartridges and all the other paraphernalia that accompanies a day outdoors can be carried without needing a bag.

The waxed cotton also makes it particularly useful around woodland and undergrowth, where lightweight technical fabrics can feel decidedly fragile.

A Proper Gilet for Shooting, Fishing and Country Sports

This is where the traditionalmen's country gilet really earns its keep.

For shooting, fishing and other field sports, unrestricted movement through the arms is important. So is having plenty of accessible storage.

A waxed cotton vest provides both.

And unlike many modern technical gilets, waxed cotton develops character as it ages. Creases, marks and changes in the finish become part of the garment rather than reasons to replace it.

That's very much our sort of clothing.

How to Wear a Men's Gilet Without Looking Like You're Off to the Office Car Park

The modern padded gilet has become almost ubiquitous.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but we prefer versions made from materials with a bit more substance and history behind them.

Wool, cotton canvas and waxed cotton give a vest texture and structure. They also tend to look better alongside the sort of clothes most of us already wear.

Gilet + Flannel Shirt + Denim

Probably the easiest combination of all.

A canvas or wool vest over a heavyweight flannel shirt, worn with good denim and leather boots, works almost anywhere.

It has its roots in workwear but doesn't look like costume.

Wool Waistcoat + Country Shirt + Moleskins

For a more traditional British country look, combine awool gilet or waistcoat with a checked cotton shirt, moleskin trousers and boots.

Add a waxed jacket or wool coat when the weather turns.

Canvas Vest + Sweatshirt or Henley

A rugged canvas vest doesn't have to be worn exclusively with collared shirts.

Try one over a heavyweight Henley, sweatshirt or knitted layer. It's an easy way of adding warmth without feeling bundled up.

Gilet as a Mid-Layer

Don't overlook the vest once winter arrives.

A wool or insulated gilet worn beneath a roomy waxed jacket, field coat or Mackinaw coat adds significant warmth around the body without putting another layer of fabric around the arms.

It's an old idea because it works.

The Best Men's Gilets Use Proper Materials

For us, material matters.

We prefernatural wool, cotton canvas and waxed cotton – materials with long histories in outdoor clothing and workwear.

They feel substantial.

They can take hard use.

They generally look better as they age.

And rather than being designed around a season's fashion, the basic designs have often been around for generations.

TheIron & Resin Work Vest,Swanndri Saddleback Wool Gilet,Stormy Kromer Waxed Cotton Vest andStormy Kromer Mackinaw Wool Button Vest approach the idea from slightly different directions, but the principle behind all four is much the same.

Keep the core warm. Keep the arms free. Build it from proper materials.
