Filson's story begins during the  Klondike Gold Rush.

Clinton C. Filson had been outfitting Pacific Northwest settlers before moving to Seattle, where he established  C.C. Filson's Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers in 1897.

Seattle had become an important departure point for prospectors heading north towards Alaska and Canada's Yukon Territory. These weren't customers buying clothing for a weekend away. Their equipment had to survive prolonged exposure to cold, rain, snow and hard physical work.

Filson supplied clothing, blankets, boots and other equipment suited to those conditions.

When the Gold Rush eventually subsided, the company adapted. Its customers increasingly included people working in forestry, logging, hunting and other outdoor trades across the Pacific Northwest.

That working heritage remains central to Filson.

Many modern outdoor brands begin with performance specifications and then design a product around them. Filson's traditional approach feels different. Much of its best equipment evolved from solving straightforward practical problems: keeping someone dry, carrying heavy equipment, protecting clothing from thorns and undergrowth, or keeping warm while working outdoors.

Eventually the wax coating will diminish, particularly around high-wear areas.

How to Care for Filson Tin Cloth

One of the advantages of waxed canvas is that it can be maintained.

The first rule is straightforward:

Don't treat a Tin Cloth jacket like an ordinary cotton jacket.

Repeated machine washing and conventional detergents can strip away the wax finish that gives the fabric its weather resistance.

For everyday dirt, allow mud to dry and brush it away.

Small areas can generally be cleaned carefully without subjecting the entire garment to unnecessary washing.

Over time you'll notice areas where the wax has worn away. Shoulders, elbows, seams and cuffs often show this first.

That's when the garment can be rewaxed.

Applying fresh wax restores weather resistance and gives you the opportunity to concentrate protection where it's needed most.

It's an old-fashioned maintenance system.

That's exactly why it works.

Caring for Filson Wool

Wool needs a different approach.

One of wool's natural advantages is that it doesn't require constant washing. Often, airing the garment and brushing away surface dirt is enough.

Always follow the care instructions supplied with the individual garment.

Heavy wool clothing should also be stored clean and dry, particularly when being put away for the warmer months.

Look after good wool properly and it can last for decades.

Again, maintenance rather than replacement.

Why Filson Costs More

There's no avoiding the fact that Filson isn't inexpensive.

A jacket worn for ten or fifteen years needs to be judged differently from something bought for a season.
